The War Between the States was perhaps the pivotal event in U.S. history. The naval forces of the conflict, though fighting somewhat on the sidelines, nevertheless were forced to expand like never before. The unforms of the time reflected this, and the U.S.N. emerged from the war with a system of insignia that was much more modernized than those of 1861.
